3 Non-Viral Books You Need on Your TBR
I think it’s safe to say that anyone who’s active on BookTok or Bookstagram has seen the same books being pushed by the algorithm for a long time now. No shade to the lucky few, as I’m sure many of them are worth the hype. However, I can’t be the only one craving some fresh meat in the book rec department!
Here are three non-viral books that I’ve read this year, each offering something unique and impactful. These books aren’t making the rounds on social media, but they deserve a place on your TBR. Let’s dive in—without spoilers!
1. Strange Sally Diamond by Liz Nugent
Thanks to my sister for recommending this one—I’m SO glad she did! This novel has everything I love —a gripping plot, rich character development, suspense, and important social commentary.
The story follows a woman named Sally who is socially inept, eccentric, and entirely misunderstood. She struggles with her identity and questions everything about herself and her past. She knows she’s different but can’t quite figure out why.
When I say this book took me on a journey, I am not exaggerating. Not only is it a well-written thriller, it also has depth. It delves deep into themes like generational trauma, abuse, and the social isolation that comes with being seen as “different” due to your life experiences.
Sally’s journey is both heartbreaking and eye-opening and I found myself resonating with her in unexpected ways.
If you’re looking for a book that combines suspense with emotional depth, this one’s for you.
2. The Age of Magical Overthinking by Amanda Montell
This nonfiction book was anything but boring. Amanda Montell’s witty, insightful, and often hilarious writing kept me engaged from start to finish. She tackles modern realities and the false narratives we find ourselves entangled in.
Ever wonder how fan groups can become SO loyal, committed, and even a bit out of touch? Read this book. Montell uses Swifties as an example of what happens when we idolize people and how detrimental it can be when they fall short of our expectations.
Ever find yourself or a friend going back to the same abusive, toxic, life-sucking relationship over and over? Read this book as it delves into toxic relationships and draws a fascinating parallel to cult-like dynamics.
If you’re introspective and often wonder how to navigate our fast-paced, influencer-driven world, this book will give you plenty to think about.
3. I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman
For anyone who’s been on my SeedLit Society journey from the start, you’ll know this is the first book I ever posted about on my Instagram account—and for good reason.
This novel blew me away with its unique concept and poignant writing. It follows a girl raised in a bunker with 39 other women. Unlike the other women, she has no memories of the outside world. Nothing reminds her of what life was like “before.” And this causes understandable tension between her and the other women as she craves to know more, and they question how much to share with her. Her loneliness and questions scream through the pages.
But what happens when the bunker doors finally open and she finds herself outside - will she finally encounter a man, or will her life remain untouched by them?
Her journey outside the bunker is as bleak as it is beautiful and is unlike anything I’ve experienced in another book.
If you want a thought-provoking, short, and emotionally intense read, this one’s for you. It’s a story like no other, and it will stay with you long after you finish.
These books may not be trending, but they’re powerful stories that deserve your attention and a spot on your TBR.
